1995 All Over Again

I just keep reading about the Sony malware case and how they're mishandling it. You'd think they'd never heard of Intel and the Pentium FDIV bug, except that this is far worse. It's much easier to explain to the average person that Sony CDs install spyware on their computer than explain that their computer makes a few mistakes doing floating point division. I don't think the end is anywhere in sight; Sony seems to be in love with the whole idea and is trying to find a way to salvage it; I expect they see this as a PR problem and see this entire "DRM" scheme as strategic to the company. Steve Loughran points out the fundamental issue: you can get the same music off iTunes without the malware. Sony trying to defend CDs sounds like the LP enthusiasts back in the 80's contending that people don't want to give up album cover art and liner notes. I wonder if Steve has anything with the pos
