Unlike her big sister, 5 days of phototherapy didn't bring her bilirubin levels down to normal levels. Due to the use of a vacuum during the birth, she's got a good-sized welt on the back of her head which means there's a lot of extra blood floating around waiting to be disposed of.

Sleep is a big enough issue in normal times, but the light box puts out about as much light as a big-screen TV, and you have to rouse yourself periodically and take an under-arm temperature to make sure the little roast hasn't overcooked. We're done with the bili box as of a few days ago. At this age, babies can tolerate a lot higher bilirubin levels, and her liver function is normal, so her body will catch up before too long. For us, though, it's so good to be able to sleep in 2-3 hour stretches.

Before long, all this will fade into those foggy memories that accompany parenting a newborn. In the meantime, I've discovered that I can sleep anywhere, anytime. If I lay down and close my eyes, I'm out within 60 seconds.
