NewsGator Online, Offline
The news that caught my attention: NewsGator is getting rid of its online reader, in favor of syncing with Google Reader. It makes me a little nostalgic: if memory serves, it was just about 5 years ago that NewsGator Online became free, unleashing a brief war for dominance in online readers between NewsGator and the leading online reader at the time, Bloglines.
I wonder what this means for the API. Looking at the list of products that are being cancelled, the only reason to be maintaining the back end services (i.e. the part that polls and stores content from feeds) is the private label platform, which still seems to be going strong. But I also don’t see a reason why they can’t use Google for that content.

This means great things for Google thats for sure, I wonder if the switch has anything to do with Google ads?

Doubt it means much of anything to Google. Based on the reader stats I’ve seen, Google had already won that battle long ago. More like an admission that there’s not much money to be made in free news readers.
