One VM to Rule Them All · 2 May, 07:25 AM
Yesterday, Patrick Logan dissed the idea of one true VM. I have to agree on that account, things like Iron Python and JRuby have always left me cold. It may be that the native VMs have their problems, but simply to do a straight port to JVM or MSIL seems like doing a whole lot of work to get back to where you started. I don’t know about Patrick’s XMPP idea. XMPP has always turned me off at a visceral level because it’s almost-but-not-really XML: if only the inventors of XMPP had either understood namespaces or eschewed them entirely, I’d be much happier with it. The idea of Erlang-style message passing is extremely attractive, though. I really, really want to like Erlang, and it’s been disappointing that I’ve had so many problems getting the code samples in the Armstrong book to actually run.
