7-zip Tip · 28 May, 03:39 PM
7-zip is a really handy utility to have if you’re looking for a simple program to produce zipped archives, particularly if you need good compression. One place I’ve found 7-zip especially useful is in packaging up crash dump files; 7-zip can produce a much smaller archive than other zip utilities. This reference provides a useful guide to the 7-Zip command line.
One thing that’s had me baffled though was how 7-zip response files worked. I’ve been getting the following error:
Incorrect item in listfile. Check charset encoding and -scs switch.
This was causing me to spin my wheels quite a bit; it turns out that this could indeed mean that your response file is encoded improperly; but what I’ve also found is that you get this error when the response file doesn’t even exist.
