In Cloud We Trust
Dare writes on not trusting the cloud, “who cares?” Dare puts it like this:
bq….people are often notoriously bad at assessing risk and often fail to consider that it is more likely that data loss will occur when their personal hardware fails given that the average computer user doesn’t have a data backup strategy than it is likely to occur if their information is stored on some Web company’s servers.
I’ll refine Dare’s point. If you don’t have your important data in some non-magnetic format (i.e. a DVD) locked away in fireproof safe deposit boxes at at least 2 separate locations, you’re still a sucker.
All that being said, if you do have data you care about, the basic point is don’t treat it like you don’t care. There are more subtle points, like surrendering your rights to your work by uploading it to Flickr with a license that allows unlimited re-use, or saving private data in a location that’s indexed by Google. That’ll bite you whether or not you paid for your account.
