Dare Obasanjo quotes a comment on /. to the effect that a Yahoo! acquisition would provide “eliminating redundant infrastructure and duplicative operating costs will improve the financial performance of the combined entity”. James Robertson made the same point earlier, relating to the Hotmail acquisition. It’d certainly take a few years, but it’d likely get done, given MS management’s track record with integrating acquisitions. It occurs to me that Yahoo owns a number of properties, but the big pieces are search, mail, ads, and IM. MS already has all that except the ads. Maybe I’m missing some things, but I think flickr & del.icio.us don’t add anything to the bottom line and integration amounts to making those sites support Passport.
Also, consider Yahoo’s support for OpenID and their interest in OAuth. It’s not just code that would suffer from a MS acquisition of Yahoo!
